Artificial insect eyes.

"Using the eyes of insects such as dragonflies and houseflies as models, a team of bioengineers at University of California, Berkeley, has created a series of artificial compound eyes."

I thought that these pictures were particuarly cool. If you click on them you can get the bigger versions. There are also higher quality pics at the original story page.

The idea behind these eyes is to actually use them "...in ultra-thin camera phones. After that, he expects to see them used in camcorders for omnidirectional surveillance imaging and such uses as small, hidden, wearable cameras."
