Conflict of interest?

From the NYTimes:
Coal-burning utilities are contributing money to one of the few remaining climate scientists openly critical of the broad consensus that fossil fuel emissions are intensifying global warming.
The drug companies have been doing it for years - why not the utility companies?
It seems like there's something different about it though, but I'm not sure what.
Any opinions?

...at least the drug companies are offering meds that work. Sure, they may be overpriced, but they don't cause MORE cancer.

This is more like cigarette companies offering money to researchers (at least they offer it to the "we hate smoking"-researchers!).

So actually, this is worse than any of those things. Selectively funding scientifically-dubious research to sell the planet's future short? Sign me up!

I think you may be a little too trusing of drug companies ;)
They support research which shows their drugs being successful.
